What Thought Mary
What
thought Mary when she saw
Her newborn Son on manger straw?
Did it grieve her heart at all
To birth Him in a cattle stall?
Was her heart a little torn
Thus her Baby should be born?
What thought Mary of her loss,
Her Saviour-Son upon a cross?
Broken-hearted, standing by;
Watch Him suffer, see Him die?
Thoughts long hid in mother-heart,
Did she understand in part?
Could she see down through the years,
Through the heartache and the tears
To the promise at His birth,
Peace and Goodwill brought to earth?
That it was for such as I
Her beloved Son would die?
